CUNEF University has been awarded the Accessibility Indicator System (AIS) certification with 5 stars, the highest possible rating, making its Almansa Campus in Madrid the first private university in the world to achieve this distinction. This milestone underscores the institution’s commitment to creating a fully accessible educational environment for its entire community, in line with its academic excellence.

The certificate was presented at a ceremony held on campus, which was attended by Esther Bienes Pinedo, president of the Foundation for Accessibility and SR and AIS, who presented the award to Ana Isabel Fernández, rector of CUNEF University.
Ana Isabel Fernández, President of CUNEF Universidad, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stressing that“our priority is to ensure that everyone associated with the campus, and especially students, have the best environment in which to develop their talent. Esther Bienes Pinedo, president of Fundación ARS
For her part, Esther Bienes Pinedo highlighted CUNEF’s great effort in terms of accessibility, recalling that “accessible education is essential to guarantee an inclusive society for everyone”.
The keys to a top-level certification for CUNEF
To obtain this certification, the university underwent an exhaustive audit based on the AIS 1/2023 standard. The process involved the evaluation of more than 1,500 control points in the four campus buildings, analyzing in detail key aspects such as physical itineraries, usability of services, inclusive communication and evacuation protocols.

The achievement has been possible because the university has incorporated a series of key improvements such as classrooms with haptic signage and accessible furniture, adjustable whiteboards with support screens, or accessible counters equipped with magnetic loops in the library and other points, among many other measures.
In addition, the synergy with the Churruca business park, where the campus is located, has provided a solid foundation for outdoor accessibility, which was already AIS certified.
With this recognition, CUNEF University consolidates its position as a benchmark of excellence and accessibility in the higher education sector, leading the way towards a more equitable future for all.
