Sonae Sierra, a multinational company that operates in an integrated manner in the real estate sector, has become an Authorized Entity to implement the AIS accessibility certification, an international standard for certifying the degree of accessibility of spaces, services and products.
The AIS 1/2023 Standard, created and managed by the ARS Foundation, certifies the level of accessibility of an environment using a 1 to 5 star system, based on a comprehensive approach that analyzes physical, cognitive and sensory accessibility, both in projects under development and in already built environments.
Thanks to this accreditation, Sonae Sierra will be able to implement the AIS standard in its various managed assets and ongoing projects, evaluating the accessibility status of the spaces according to the methodology and criteria of the ARS Foundation standard. This process includes the analysis of the environment, the identification of areas for improvement and the proposal of solutions to achieve the highest levels of accessibility.
To obtain this authorization, Sonae Sierra’s professionals have completed the AIS 1/2023 Certified Technician Course, a specialized training given by the ARS Foundation itself, which enables them to implement this international certification.
Accessibility as a strategic axis
Sonae Sierra reinforces its commitment to universal accessibility in its real estate assets, integrating this approach in its global ESG strategy and in the daily experience of those who visit and work in its spaces. The company develops and manages centers and projects with inclusive design criteria, eliminating physical, sensory and communication barriers, and promoting safe, comfortable and user-friendly environments for all people, regardless of their age or condition.
This commitment has resulted in the certification, to date, of 6 shopping centers in the company’s portfolio in Spain: Plaza Mayor, Gran Casa, Área Sur, Valle Real, Max Center and Max Ocio.
In addition, this commitment is also reflected in the progressive incorporation of improved accessibility solutions; from clear pathways and intuitive signage to specific support services, as well as collaboration with tenants and partners to raise accessibility standards throughout the value chain.
