• Las Tablas Oeste, the first of the four areas of Madrid Nuevo Norte to start its urbanization, has begun the certification process to guarantee an accessible and inclusive urban environment from its design.
  • Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte promotes the evaluation of the urban environment according to the AIS 1/2023 Standard, an international standard created and managed by Fundación ARS, to reinforce its commitment to the development of neighborhoods designed for all people.

The area of Las Tablas Oeste, one of the four that make up the Madrid Nuevo Norte project, will be the first major urban regeneration project to begin its accessibility certification in accordance with the AIS 1/2023 Urban Environment standard. With this initiative, Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte reinforces its commitment to sustainable urban development, creating inclusive environments designed to guarantee universal accessibility from the earliest planning stages.

The certification will be carried out in accordance with the AIS 1/2023 Standard, an international standard created and managed by Fundación ARS, which evaluates the degree of accessibility of spaces and services using a 1 to 5 star rating system. This model incorporates a comprehensive vision of accessibility -physical, cognitive and sensory- and analyzes more than 500 objective and measurable requirements related to aspects such as accessible pedestrian routes, urban connections, green areas, urban equipment, accessible signage, parking spaces or cycling infrastructures.

First phase: Las Tablas West

In the case of Las Tablas Oeste, the process initiated with the pre-qualification of the project in the design phase will continue, once the development has been executed, with the final certification of the urban environment. For this purpose, Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte will be advised by Ingenia, an authorized entity for the evaluation according to the AIS standard.

“From Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte we are working so that the new neighborhoods to be developed in this area are born with the highest quality standards, for which it is key to think about accessibility and inclusion. Incorporating AIS certification from the design of Las Tablas Oeste allows us to guarantee that public space, mobility and urban services are designed for all people, regardless of their abilities,” says José Ignacio Morales, CEO of Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte.

“Our goal is to build a more accessible city model, where the quality of public space, connectivity and inclusion are part of the project’s DNA from the very beginning.”

Project details

Las Tablas Oeste will be the first area of Madrid Nuevo Norte to begin construction before the summer and is conceived as a new mixed-use neighborhood (residential and office) that will extend the existing Las Tablas neighborhood towards the train tracks. The area will incorporate new housing (37% of which will be publicly managed), large green areas, public facilities and urban spaces designed under criteria of sustainability, accessibility and urban quality.

For its part, the ARS Foundation stresses that this process is an important step towards promoting more inclusive urban environments: “Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte is making great efforts to achieve inclusive urban environments and this commitment to accessibility will help create the Madrid we all want: a Madrid of the future for all people,” says Esther Bienes Pinedo, director of the foundation.

With this initiative, Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte reinforces its commitment to placing universal accessibility as one of the pillars of the project’s sustainable urban development, contributing to building a more inclusive city model that is prepared for the needs of all citizens.
